The top three articles this week were:
- Microsoft tablet to resurface in the big Apple on October 25
- MiNi tablet tales
- Nominet create a new gTLD & disrupts the .UK Internet
Nominet’s new shiny website is still encountering quite a few teething problems eg:
- Its Macro-economic influence graph {bottom right) on “The UK in detail” page shows the FTSE apparently reached nearly 25,000 in 2010.
- Closer to home in its October 1 Press release on Direct.UK they have a Page not found error on this link “For further information on the .uk policy process, please visit www.nominet.org.uk/policy/ ……..”.
The Consultation they launched on Monday continues to cause us concern. ALL (that’s millions) of UK businesses with a .co.uk domain will be effected if Nominet’s proposals proceed substantially as announced. The value of these businesses Intellectual Property (howsoever obtained) and the associated Goodwill could be adversely impacted. We think it is possible that if ANY such business does NOT apply under the existing rights phases an application could (and no doubt would) be made by other parties in the landrush phase leading to potentially millions of competitor domain names such as:
- Google.uk
- BBC.uk
- Ebay.uk
- Amazon.uk
- DailyMail.uk
- Guardian.uk
- Telegraph.uk
- RightMove.uk
- HSBC.uk
- Argos.uk
- Etc.uk
- Andsonandson.uk
- Andmillionsofothers.uk
We shall return to this topic but in the meantime encourage everyone to make themselves aware of Nominets proposals and to spread the word/concerns.
This is where you can get further information
Here’s the consultation (pdf) or “You can respond to the consultation either by completing an online form, by downloading the consultation and emailing your comments to direct@nominet.org.uk or by requesting a hard copy of the consultation from direct@nominet.org.uk”
And here’s their video & link http://youtu.be/Q6Gu2cQRVpk which again we encourage you to publicise widely.
