“After falling behind Apple for the last two quarters Google regained the top spot …… thanks to buzz about new and improved products, including Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the Nexus 7 tablet, the Nexus Q and the Google glass prototype.”
Google’s announcement took place at their I/O Conference right at the end of the quarter (June 27) but, as is increasingly common in the sector, there was certainly a significant amount of “buzz” around prior to the conference. This we reckon augurs well for a return to the top by Apple next quarter following their rumoured “Media Event” on September 12. Historically as soon as the media invitations are sent out and the venue announced there is a real deluge of rumours around the internet which on General Sentiments Brand valuation basis is almost guaranteed to get them back to the top. We shall see.
Whilst on the subject of the Nexus 7 we are most impressed with the product which we have had for 2 or 3 weeks now. Good quality hardware and Jelly Bean seems an improvement on ICS. Only mini irritation is that there isn’t yet a compatible BBC iPlayer app.
We see that initial forecasts for Nexus 7 worldwide shipments of 5 to 10 million, or possibly more are being made for 2012. This for effectively half a year would be most impressive. We think this is at the very top end of the range.
An Apple MiNi iPad announcement is imminent and we note with a little amusement that Steve Jobs apparently didn’t dislike them as much as he previously indicated! KindleFire product enhancements with possible worldwide rollouts are also due in the quarter. And lastly there maybe a possible Microsoft reSurfaceing before September 30.
In our view the GAMa wars have barely just begun.
